ISSUES IN RAISING CHILDREN BILINGUALLY

At Susanne Dopke will offer information on how bilingualism influences a child's development and what parents and other carers can do to help the child speak both languages. The session will be of interest to parents just starting out as well as those who are wondering if they are doing the right thing or who have to defend themselves against criticism. It will also support professionals who are dealing with bilingual families.

SIMPLE LITERACY GAMES FOR YOUNGER LEARNERS

This session will introduce you to some simple games and activities to help your children acquire some basic literacy skills in your language. There will be some 'old favourites' for you to adapt as well as some new ideas. There will be the opportunity to share useful websites for language learning, so bring along a list of any websites you and your children use to support their language learning.

FOSTERING BILINGUALISM IN KINDERGARTENS ND SCHOOLS

TAveril Grieve will discuss techniques employed by educators in bilingual kindergartens and schools to encourage young children to learn and maintain their languages. This includes discussing different approaches bilingual kindergartens and schools use to tap into children's natural abilities to learn more than one language simultaneously. Key to this is providing a structured, positive, safe and motivational environment for the children and offering activities that match their stages of social and linguistic development.

PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE

Susanne Dopke will give examples of practical strategies, which ensure the development of the community language and prevent or solve difficulties. This will include supporting the child's first steps into language, as well as strategies, games and resources for the older pre-school child. This session will be of interest to parents of toddlers and pre-school children as well as professionals advising parents.
